Sourav Ganguly is not playing in the IPL-4. But he isn’t the only one who has been baptised. There are several other ex-superstars like Jayasuriya, Lara and Gayle who have been overlooked. So what’s the fuss about Sourav? Why is there so much of halla about he not being selected? Well, to admit, there is nothing special about Sourav, but something about him is definitely unique!
Sourav has more IPL man of the match awards than any other rejected player this year. He was the former Indian captain and the captain of KKR in IPL 1, 2 and 3. He performed well in IPL 1 and 3. Putting everything together, his case is definitely different from every other cricketer considered not good enough for IPL 4.
Let’s look at the greater loss of KKR by not selecting him. Sourav is the most popular cricketer that Kolkata has produced. Very few IPL players have been as closely associated with the city they played. Sourav was one of them. Bengalis are among the greatest patrons of cricket in the world and therefore, Sourav holds a premier position in the hearts of Bengalis. Although, he has retired from international cricket, but nobody really has replaced him. By dumping him, KKR has destroyed its strongest link with the city of joy.
