For a moment let’s forget world cinema. Let’s forget Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak and John Abraham. Let’s also forget about the early Hindi cinema which belonged to the likes of Guru Dutt, Raj Kapoor, Bimal Roy and V Shantaram. Any serious film viewer will ask – “what remains to be watched?” Well, my friend, the answer is there on YouTube.
YouTube has a wonderful (if not exhaustive) collection of some of the most amazing Hindi films of the parallel film era (late 60’s till date). Although I wish it had more of Mani Kaul, Kumar Shahani and Saeed Akhtar Mirza in it. Here is a small list I could come up with for myself and fellow viewers –
Shyam Benegal
Anand Patwardhan
Mani Kaul
Sai Paranjpye
Ketan Mehta
Basu Chatterjee
- Triyacharitra
- Ek Ruka Hua Faisla (12 angry men remake)
Govind Nihlani
Goutam Ghose
Vidhu Vinod Chopra
Mahesh Bhatt
Others
- Kumar Shahani’s Maya Darpan
- M S Sathyu’s Garam Hawa
- Kundan Shah’s Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron
- Rabindra Dharmaraj’s Chakra
- Saeed Akhtar Mirza’s Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai
- Shivendra Singh Dungarpur’s Celluloid Man
- Deepa Bhatia’s Nero’s Guests
Thanks for such a wonderful recommendations .
