Don’t we all wish we lived in Malgudi?

This could have been just a normal story. But RK Narayan’s wit and childlike innocence had turned it into something special, and made it the one of a kind book to read. To add to it was the perfect direction by Shankar Nag. And it became a 360 degree reflection of life in Malnad, the culture and the beauty of the place we so dearly call Malgudi. Continue reading

On Sabarimala tragedy

For the second time in the past year, a stampede has killed people recklessly. On the night of January 14, the climactic day of the Sabarimala pilgrimage season, a stampede has cost over 100 lives besides leaving many injured. Isn’t it incumbent upon the authorities to ensure that every pilgrim has a safe and comfortable darshan? Continue reading

Jantar Mantar- the pride of India!

Ever wondered why Jantar-Mantar is named so? Jantar means “instrument”, and Mantar means “formula”, or in this context- “calculation”. Therefore Jantar-Mantar means ‘calculation instruments’. These astronomical wonders are age old observatories and have scientific as well as religious significance, since ancient Indian astronomers were also Jyotisa masters. The instruments in Jantar Mantar are the pride of our nation and a must know for every engineer! Continue reading

Benaras- the city of Gods- part II

Atithi devo bhawah- part II

Last year India had 3.3 million visitors, but when you consider that Singapore gets 7 million a year, Thailand 9.6 million a year, Malaysia 11.5 million- our’s is a pretty small number! That too when the country possesses the greatest of the 7 wonders of the world, and the most exotic places on earth! The point is simple- we’ve lost touch with the hospitality we were famous for. Now it’s a time that we make an effort to make it a part of us again! The ads are pretty cool and heart filling. Here are a few more videos- Continue reading

Atithi devo bhawah- part I

The ministry of tourism is using this ancient adage to promote tourism by a publicity campaign. They are selling ‘Incredible India’. The ministry also started a campaign ‘Atithi devo bhavah’, which they claim- ‘A nation wide campaign that aims at sensitizing key stakeholders towards tourists, through a process of training and orientation’. They have also come up with some wonderful ads to promote this, with Aamir Khan as their brand ambassador- Continue reading

A journey to Meghalaya- The adobe of clouds

I had written this during my memorable journey to Meghalaya in February, 2008.

It was early February and my exams had just got over. Exams had gone well, but as usual; I never hoped for good results (and they never happen either). It had been a great semester. I reached home on 5th Feb. Baba (dad) had planned a trip to Assam & Meghalaya, starting from 6th Feb. Continue reading
